The Maine Bluefin Tuna season kicks off in June and typically runs for about six months. It’s a highly regulated and closely monitored fishery, managed through a quota-based system. Each month, fishermen are allocated a specific harvest limit in tons. Once that monthly quota is reached, the fishery temporarily closes—reopening again the following month if quota remains available. This management approach helps ensure long-term sustainability while still supporting our hardworking local fleet.
